Pledge Issues

Having trouble with a pledge? Here's what to do in common pledge scenarios.

Not sure what a pledge is? Read the Pledges Explained guide first.

My Pledge Wasn't Fulfilled — Recipient Connected but Nothing Happened

When a recipient connects their Stripe account, all pending pledges on their pages should be fulfilled automatically. If this didn't happen, check the following:

  • Card authorization expired: Stripe setup intents (used to save cards for pledges) have an authorization window. If too much time passed between making the pledge and the recipient connecting, the authorization may have lapsed. You'll receive an email if this occurs — at that point the pledge was cancelled with no charge.
  • Pledge was already cancelled: Check your email for any pledge cancellation notifications. If the pledge window expired and you chose to cancel, the pledge will not be re-attempted.
  • Card was declined on fulfillment: When fulfillment runs, your card is charged. If the card was declined at that point (e.g., it expired or was reported lost), the fulfillment fails. You'll receive an email notification.

If none of the above applies and you're certain your pledge should still be pending, contact support with the donation page name and the date you made the pledge.

My Card Expired Before the Pledge Was Fulfilled

If the card saved with your pledge has expired:

  • The fulfillment attempt will fail and you'll receive an email notification.
  • The pledge will be marked as failed — no charge will have been made.
  • Unfortunately, SplitGive cannot update the saved card on an existing pledge. You would need to make a new donation on the page if you still want to support the recipient.
No charge was made. An expired card means the fulfillment attempt failed silently — your account was not charged.

How Do I Cancel a Pledge?

You can cancel an active pledge in two ways:

  • From the cancellation email: When the pledge window approaches its deadline, you'll receive an email with a link to cancel or keep the pledge active. Click "Cancel pledge" in that email.
  • Contact support: If you'd like to cancel a pledge that's still within its active window, contact support with the page name and approximate pledge date and we can cancel it for you.
No charge on cancellation. Cancelling a pledge means no money leaves your account. Your card is never charged for a cancelled pledge.

For Recipients: I Connected Stripe but Pledges Weren't Processed

After connecting your Stripe account, pending pledges should process automatically within a few minutes. If they haven't:

  • Account still pending review: If Stripe hasn't fully verified your account yet (status: "restricted" or "pending"), payouts and transfers may be temporarily blocked. Check your Stripe dashboard for any action items.
  • Pledges may have already expired: If the pledge window passed before you connected, those pledges would have been cancelled or moved to an expired state. New donations going forward will be processed immediately.
  • Brief processing delay: Pledge processing happens automatically but can take a few minutes after you connect. If it's been more than 30 minutes, contact support.

For details on connecting your Stripe account, see the recipient getting started guide.

The Pledge Window Expired — What Now?

When the 14-day pledge window expires:

  • The donor receives an email notification asking them to confirm or cancel.
  • If the donor cancels, the pledge is closed and no charge is made.
  • If the donor chooses to keep it active, the pledge remains open — and if the recipient later connects Stripe, it may still be fulfilled (subject to the card authorization still being valid).

If you're a recipient who connected after the window expired, contact support — in some cases we may be able to work with affected donors to re-pledge.
