Getting Started: Donors
Making a donation through SplitGive.app is simple. Here's how it works from start to finish.
1 Visit a Donation Page
Someone will share a donation page link with you — via email, social media, or a website. Click the link to open the page.
On the donation page you'll see:
- A description of the cause or project you're supporting
- The recipients — the people or organizations who will receive your gift, and what percentage each will receive
- Any tax deductibility notes for nonprofit recipients
2 Choose Your Amount
Select how much you'd like to give:
- Click one of the suggested amounts (e.g., $25, $50, $100) for quick selection
- Or enter a custom amount in the text field
As you choose your amount, you'll see a live breakdown of how much each recipient will receive.
You'll also see the option to cover the fees. If you check this box, a small amount is added to your total so that the full amount you intended goes to the recipients — none is lost to processing fees.
3 Enter Your Payment Information
SplitGive.app uses Stripe to securely process all payments. Your card details go directly to Stripe — SplitGive.app never stores them.
- Enter your name and email address — your receipt will be sent to this email
- Enter your card number, expiration date, and CVC
- Click Donate to submit your payment
4 Your Donation Is Split Automatically
Once your payment is confirmed, SplitGive.app automatically divides your donation between all the recipients according to their percentages.
For example, if you donate $100 to a page with two recipients at 60% and 40%:
- Recipient A receives $60 (minus any fees)
- Recipient B receives $40 (minus any fees)
Each recipient gets paid directly to their Stripe account — SplitGive.app never holds the funds.
5 Get Your Receipt
You'll receive a receipt by email right after your donation is processed.
Your receipt includes:
- Total donation amount and date
- How your donation was split between each recipient, with amounts
- Tax status of each recipient (including EIN for eligible nonprofits)
- A link to download a PDF receipt for your records
6 If a Recipient Isn't Ready Yet
Sometimes a recipient hasn't connected their Stripe account yet when you donate. In that case, your donation becomes a pledge.
- Your payment method is saved securely with Stripe — you are not charged yet
- The recipient has a limited time window to connect their account
- Once they connect, your pledge is automatically fulfilled and you're charged
- If they don't connect in time, you'll receive an email and can choose to redirect or cancel your pledge
