Tax Deductibility

SplitGive is built for transparency — including on the question of tax deductibility. Here's everything you need to know.

SplitGive Is Not a Charity

SplitGive is a technology platform — we are not a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donating through SplitGive is not the same as donating to SplitGive.

Whether a donation is tax-deductible depends entirely on the recipient's tax status, not SplitGive's. SplitGive simply facilitates the transfer of funds from donors to recipients.

When Donations May Be Tax-Deductible

A donation may be tax-deductible if the recipient is a qualifying tax-exempt organization. In the United States, this typically means a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Likely Deductible

  • Registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits
  • Churches and religious organizations
  • Recognized charitable organizations

Generally Not Deductible

  • Donations to individuals
  • Donations to for-profit businesses
  • Personal fundraisers without nonprofit status

When a donation page has multiple recipients — some nonprofit, some not — only the portion going to the qualifying nonprofit recipients may be deductible.

The EIN System

SplitGive uses Employer Identification Numbers (EINs) to identify nonprofit recipients and communicate tax status to donors.

For page creators:

  • When adding a nonprofit recipient, enter their EIN in the recipient setup
  • The EIN appears on donor receipts and on the donation page itself
  • This signals to donors that this portion of their gift may be tax-deductible

For recipients:

  • If you're a 501(c)(3) organization, the page creator can enter your EIN
  • Your EIN will appear on donation receipts, helping donors with their tax records
  • SplitGive does not independently verify EINs — the page creator is responsible for entering the correct number

What Your Receipt Shows

After a donation, donors receive a detailed receipt that includes:

  • Date and total amount of the donation
  • A line-by-line breakdown of how funds were split
  • Each recipient's name and amount they received
  • For nonprofit recipients: their EIN number and a note that donations may be tax-deductible
  • For non-nonprofit recipients: a clear note that this portion is not tax-deductible
  • A downloadable PDF for your permanent records
Save your receipt. Your receipt email contains a link to download a PDF. Keep this for your tax records — you may need it when filing.

Pages With Mixed Recipients

SplitGive is unique in that a single donation can go to multiple recipients — some nonprofit, some not. In this case:

  • Only the portion allocated to qualifying nonprofits may be tax-deductible
  • Your receipt clearly separates which amounts went to whom
  • This lets you (and your tax professional) identify the potentially deductible portion
